MEETING MINUTES

The minutes for the Board’s February meeting were approved as presented at our March 10 meeting. That means they are available, upon request, by contacting property manager Jodie Marion (jmarion@axiamanagement.com).

Minutes for the March meeting will be available after approval at our monthly meeting in April.

NO, THE TAX MAN HAS NOT FORGOTTEN US

He’s just biding his time till he can hit us with a whopper of a municipal tax bill.

A call to the City of Ottawa’s tax people yielded the following information:

·          no, condo owners at 60-100 Prestige have not been sent the interim tax bills almost everyone else has received;

·      * in fact, we probably won’t get our 2015 bill this year at all;

·      * we will only be billed once we are assessed by MPAC, something that likely won’t happen until some time in 2016;

·       * then we’ll have a doozy of a bill (though that wasn’t the official word used). It will cover the part of 2014 we owned our condos, all of 2015, and 2016.

If you’re interested, the City of Ottawa has information on how to get a rough estimate of what you might owe. Go to ottawa.ca and then “Property taxes.” Under “General tax information,” there’s a “Property tax estimator.” It requires an MPAC assessment amount, which we don’t have. But you can enter purchase price to get an approximate idea.

In any case, the message is clear. Hang on to the money you’ve put aside for your property taxes, because they will be coming for it.

Just not any time soon.

DOGS, OWNERS AND CONDO LIFE

Those of us who have dogs love them with a passion, like family members.

But those of us with dogs who have moved into a condo community have also become aware of something else: not everyone feels the same way about our pets as we do.

Condo owners who do not have dogs worry primarily about the possibility of noise and mess. And who can blame them?

As a result, dog-owners — at least most of us — have become very sensitive to these concerns. The last thing we want to do is create reasons for people to complain about our dogs.

So we keep our pooches leashed. We make sure they don’t bark excessively. (Crating works wonders for those dogs who worry — and bark — when they’re left alone.) And we’re scrupulous about cleanliness.

In other words, we don’t let our dogs pee on the vulnerable grass (even when it’s under snow) that surrounds our buildings. And we PICK UP after them.

Incredibly, some of us have recently found dog poop on the sidewalks in front of our buildings. The sidewalks! Where people walk!

There were three distinct piles this week, clearly from a dog that was neither very small nor particularly large. (Dog owners can tell these sorts of things.) And some of us ended up taking care of the messes ourselves, even though our dogs were not responsible.

If you own a dog, no matter what size, please — pick up!

When you don’t, it reflects on all of us. It also makes our beloved pooches that much less welcome in our new condo community.
